Pupil Premium

Free School Lunches and Pupil Premium

Our Pupil Premium lead is Mrs Rachel Woodier

The Pupil Premium Grant

Our intention is that all pupils, irrespective of their background or the challenges they face, make good progress and achieve high attainment across all subject areas. The focus of our pupil premium strategy is to support disadvantaged pupils to achieve that goal, including progress for those who are already high attainers.

High-quality teaching is at the heart of our approach, with a focus on areas in which disadvantaged pupils require the most support. This is proven to have the greatest impact on closing the disadvantage attainment gap and at the same time will benefit the non-disadvantaged pupils in our school. Implicit in the intended outcomes detailed below, is the intention that non-disadvantaged pupils’ attainment will be sustained and improved alongside progress for their disadvantaged peers.

Implementation of Pupil Premium at Glusburn

At Glusburn Community Primary School we believe that all children can succeed regardless of their socio-economic background and that quality first teaching is fundamental in promoting good progress and attainment for all, especially the most disadvantaged. First and foremost, we believe in a ‘Keep up, not catch up’ approach’.

Our strategy has been implemented based on first diagnosing the key challenges to children’s progress and then carefully selecting a small number of evidence-based strategies to implement. Our implementation approach of our ‘identified priorities’ follows the principles of EEF’s ‘School’s Guide to Implementation’ and selects a few things to do well, thus giving them the best chance of success. Our selected approach follows the EEF’s tiered model, putting the greatest emphasis on teaching, our most powerful lever.

We aim to:

  • Improve early years language development.
  • Embed a culture of reading supporting vocabulary development.
  • Reduce persistent absence.
  • Improve Maths fluency.
  • Increase engagement in extra-curricular activities
  • Improve writing standards: grammar, punctuation and spelling, and letter formation.
  • Develop a whole-school trauma informed approach and embed My Happy Mind PSHCE Scheme across the whole school
  • Monitor parental engagement with parent consultations, assess barriers to parents attendance.

We aim to do this through a 3 tiered approach:

As per the model advocated by the Education Endowment Fund, we have adopted a tiered approach to define our priorities and achieve a balanced approach. The three categories of our tiered approach are:

  1. Teaching
  2. Targeted academic support
  3. Wider strategies

What are ‘universal free school lunches for infants’?

If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 they will automatically be able to receive a free school lunch. This is called the ‘universal free school lunch.

How will the Pupil Premium help my family?

If you are in receipt of FSM (Free School Meals) or have been in the past 6 years, your child could get:

Free ‘cool milk’ in school at break times

A contribution towards school uniform costs

Free school visits / Free after school clubs

Funding for swimming lessons / Funding for residential visits in years 5 and 6.

How do I qualify for Free School lunches if my child is not in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2?

Your child may be able to get free school lunches if you get any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit – if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

You can check for eligibility here

If my child receives an ‘infant free school lunch’, should I still apply for free school lunch and hence the Pupil Premium?

YES. This is very important and often overlooked by parents. For children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 who already receive the ‘universal free school meal’, they should most definitely apply for “free school meals” if you meet the criteria above. As mentioned, this gives the school extra money to support your child’s education through its Pupil Premium whole school action plan.

*If your application is successful then your child will receive a free school lunch among other benefits, whilst the school will receive the Pupil Premium, enabling further support to all children through the Pupil Premium whole school action plan

How do I apply for Free School lunches?

In order for school to receive this extra funding, parents must complete and application form. If you are unsure if this applies to your family or would like some help with applying, please contact the school office.
